Great Synagogue Offertory Book (GSOFa) – INTRODUCTION by Henry Roche
This Offertory Book, now in the archives of the Jewish Museum in London, is one of the four Offertory books listed by Cecil Roth as B32–35 in his 1930 book The Archives of the United Synagogue, where he catalogues them as “Sabbath Offertory books, parchment, with holes and laces, eighteenth century” [in fact this one is c.1825+ (see below)]. Since they do not seem to have been specifically numbered or dated, I have designated this, the first of the four to have been transcribed, as GSOF(a).
Offertory Books (sometimes known as Gabbai Books) were used by the Gabbai or other synagogue official to record worshippers’ offerings by means of laces and holes, it being forbidden to write on the Sabbath. In Chapter 5 of his 1940 book History of the Great Synagogue, Cecil Roth writes: “The names of the members of the congregation were entered in a great parchment register, in alphabetical order, down the side of each page. Along the top, the columns were marked with various amounts, from a few pence to a pound or more, with a row of perforations below them opposite each name. Each page was provided, moreover, with a lace. Thus, when any person made an offering, the lace could be inserted in the right place under the column indicating the specified amount.” In the same chapter is a photograph of p.13 of this very book, viewable on the jewishgen website.
Examination and transcription of the book took place by courtesy of the Museum on 15 January 2016, with one further visit on 23 August. Between these dates the book was removed for conservation work, and it seems improbable that further examination will be allowed. I believe nevertheless that, although no photographs were taken, an accurate and comprehensive transcription has been achieved.
GSOFa is a bulky volume of nearly sixty parchment leaves, inscribed simply “Offertory Book”, with a mark N47, probably added later. Although ascribed by Roth and others to the eighteenth century, it is clearly shown by this transcription to date from the third decade of the nineteenth century, i.e. from 1824 or 1825, continuing in use until the late 1830’s.
It contains 57 recto sides (i.e. in this case left-hand pages), inscribed entirely in Hebrew. Each page has thirteen lines (rows) and eight columns, the person’s name entered at the left side of the row. The eight columns are inscribed at the top of the page with specific amounts of money, as follows:– 1: 6d. 2: 1s. 3 & 4:18d [1s.6d]. 5 & 6: Half-crown [2s.6d]. 7: 1 Crown [5s]. 8: Half-guinea [10s.6d]. Thus the laces would simply be fitted into the hole that denoted that worshipper’s donation.
Analysis of the names has identified the English names of nearly all the entries, and the great majority are found to have been Great Synagogue Privileged Members (for which group see GSMEM introduction). It seems very likely that the same applies to all names in the book, even where other evidence may be lacking; and this gives the book particular importance, since the Membership List for the Great Synagogue covering the period from 1817 to 1846 has been missing for 100 years or more.
The book consists simply of some 400 Hebrew names, entered by alphabetical order of Hebrew letter. The order of Hebrew given names within each letter is however anything but alphabetical (for instance, the names on p.1 start with Asher followed by Aaron, then by Abraham on p.2 line 4). This list concludes on p.38 (though the following pages contain a few later additions). Within each given name, the Wardens (Parnassim) are shown first, and the order thereafter seems based on seniority of membership, though this order seems not to be firmly adhered to within every given name.
The names are generally written in the minimum form necessary for identification within the congregation, e.g. Asher bar Elias or Moses bar Nathan Cohen. Additional detail seems to be included only if necessary or in regular use. Even the tribal names Cohen and Levi are omitted in rare cases, such as nos.194 and 196. But care is usually taken to indicate honorific titles for both names and patronyms: thus a past or present Parnas (Warden) is titled “P-um”, and “b-h” or other forms refer to the “honourable” or learned status of the father (Eizik bh David indicating Eizik ben H David, and so on). But the form “bar” is so prevalent that it has been treated as simply the equivalent of “ben” (i.e. “son of”).
During the fifteen or so years of the book’s use, new people became (presumably) Privileged Members, and so new names needed to be added. The most commonly used given names tended to have started at the top of a new page, as can still be seen with David (p.7) and Judah (p.12), and this practice often resulted in unoccupied spaces under the names on the previous page, available for additional entries. Such blanks can still be seen, though many may of course have been filled by additions. But it is naturally difficult to judge which names towards the end of a series may have been there from the start, and which added after the book’s original date. There are also a few additions in the pages after p.38, as mentioned above – these are chiefly A’s and M’s.
But there is also an ingenious system of horizontal slits in the parchment above and below each individual name, allowing for the paper-insertion of additional names on top of the names of those who had died, emigrated or otherwise ceased to be members. Alternatively, a number of original names could be rearranged and combined with new names on a single long vertical strip of paper inserted through a whole sequence of slits. Since I made no attempt to disturb or move any of these paper insertions, it would need deduction or guesswork to infer what names may lie underneath the insertions. In one place only was the original name quite visible through the inserted substitution, the single insertion on page 12 line 6 (no.142). This original name has been numbered as 142a. All these substitutions are indicated by † or * (see below).
But this removal or effacement of names took place only when necessary – i.e. if a new name was considered to “require” the space – and there are many entrants’ names that were left unremoved and unaltered after their deaths. There are several such who died before 1830; and since the earliest instance seems to be no.029 Isaac Levy who died in June 1825, this strongly suggests a date not much earlier than this for the book’s inception. For the latest entries in the book, see the sons of Nathan Rothschild, nos.031, 229, 303 and 389, born between 1808 and 1818, of whom the youngest, Myer, can hardly have been inscribed much before 1839.
There are also a few blank spaces showing possible signs of total erasure of a name. These occur mainly towards the end of the book; but since hardly any traces remain visible, they have been simply classed as empty.
From all the above, it will be seen that while the order of individual names may invite deductions about the order and perhaps date of their membership, such chronological inferences should often be considered subject to a greater or lesser degree of uncertainty.
All entries are for 1820 -30's. For a list of abbreviations used please see below the table. There are over 400 entries, you can either go to the bottom of the table and click 'next' or use the 'Search' at the top.

Hello! I have a handwritten confirmation of birth of Moses Magnus – the back of the paper is annotated ‘certificate of the birth of M Isaacs’ whilst the statement inside pertains to certifying that Moses Magnus was born in the city of london etc etc.
Knowing little about Jewish ancestry I’m trying to understand where this gentleman may fit into my family and just wanted to know whether the ISAACS refers to his familial name?
Many thanks

Hello. In your record for Lesser Gottheimer (from GSOFa):
[GOTTHEIMER] [Lesser] Leizer Abraham G-h H p 18/12.† GSM 249/07 (1827). Census 1851 Whitechapel. Wife Eliza remarried 1863. GSOFa 223
You list the father as “Abraham G-h H”. H = HaHaver, but what is “G-h”? Is it written as such, in which case I assume it is short for Gottheimer?
Many thanks! Stephen
Hello Stephen, Please take a look at the abbreviations listed below the table by Henry Roche (the info in the table is his work). Words / names in [ ] (square brackets) are not in the original record but gathered from other additional research. Therefore, Gottheimer and first name Lesser have been established from the abbreviation G-H and Leizer Abraham found in the original record. That is my understanding from the information provided by Henry. I hope this helps.

Hello,
Can you tell me if Jacob Isaac Levy Miers, if the latter surname is not an addition?
He is the father of Miriam Elizabeth Miers, mother of Leslie Hore-Belisha (London).
Can you help me, the latter was the first cousin of my father M Levy.
Many thanks in advance, with my best regards
Marceline-Rose Johnen-Levy
Oui c’est ajouté ici mais L’entrée est la même que celle indiquée dans le registre. GSM2 202/100 Great Synagogue Marriage records
SynagogueScribes et GSM 249/06
Yes it is added here “Entries from the Great Synagogue Offertory Book by Henry Roche” in [ ] to show that Miers does not appear in the Offertory book, but it is a match to the marriage register records linked above.
