Notes Levi Israel was one of the founders of the Synagogue at Chatham “August 14 1780 No. 7 a lease renewed to John Roberts of two tenements in St. Margaret’s, Rochester. “One used for a Jews Synagogue, let to Levi Israel and others, etc”. (Ch2/l8). Presumably Levi Israel and his associates had been in occupation of this tenement since 1770 at the latest…..Later in the same document for 1787 (Ch2/14 p.225) there is a copy of a licence from St. Bartholomew Hospital, Rochester to Roberts to alienate both tenements.to: Levi Israel of Chatham, silversmith Solomon Mordecai of Rochester, silversmith Israel Levi of Rochester, chapman Humphrey Solomon of Rochester, salesman Isaac Abraham of St. Margaret’s, Rochester, tobacconist Hart Cohan of Chatham, salesman Michael Abraham of Chatham, salesman Abraham Moses of Chatham, salesman. This document, dated 6 January 1787, may well contain the first explicit record of the leading members of the Jewish community in Chatham and Rochester acting together and is also a useful genealogical record in itself.
